A former child prodigy profiled on 60 Minutes and The Today Show, jazz pianist and organist Matthew Whitaker has performed at such venues as Carnegie Hall, the Kennedy Center, Lincoln Center and the Apollo Theater with artists including Christian McBride, Regina Carter, Jason Moran, Jon Batiste and the New York Pops Orchestra. In recent years, Matthew was added to The Root’s list of 1 of 25 Young Futurist Leaders and was named as 1 of 7 rising stars for 2018 by USA Today network's 201 Magazine. Also a composer, Matthew was a winner of The ASCAP Foundation Herb Alpert Young Jazz Composers Award and just released an expansive new recording Connections, featuring a generous mix of original compositions. “The fleetness of finger, the touch and taste, the grit and grime when he needs it, the lightness and airiness when it’s called upon—Whitaker has it all.” —Downbeat (August 2021)
About Chautauqua Institution: Chautauqua Institution is a community on the shores of Chautauqua Lake in southwestern New York state that comes alive each summer with a unique mix of fine and performing arts, lectures, interfaith worship and programs, and recreational activities. As a community, we celebrate, encourage and study the arts and treat them as integral to all of learning, and we convene the critical conversations of the day to advance understanding through civil dialogue. CHQ Assembly is the online expression of Chautauqua Institution's mission.
