Dr. Chen Yi, an internationally-recognized composer and Distinguished Professor of Music is the inaugural Claudette Sorel Visiting Artist at the State University of New York Fredonia in partnership with the Chautauqua Institution. A native of China, Dr. Chen’s music features a vibrant interaction of the cultural references of both her youth in China and her career in the United States, transcending musical and cultural boundaries. Commissioned by artists and orchestras such as Yo-Yo Ma, Evelyn Glennie, the Cleveland Orchestra and BBC Symphony, Dr. Chen is a strong advocate for new music and has served on the advisory or educational board of the Fromm Foundation, Chamber Music America, and Meet the Composer, among many others. This recital of Chen Yi's works will feature distinguished artist faculty of the SUNY Fredonia School of Music. In addition to presentation of Dr. Chen’s music, traditional Chinese elements will include the “Lion Dance” and a performance on the yang qin, a Chinese dulcimer. Sponsored by The Sorel Organization, Expanding Opportunities for Women in Music and SUNY Fredonia.
