Originally broadcast at 7 p.m. ET Thursday, April 29, 2021.
Eliese remembered driving with her father past the rust-covered buildings in the Cleveland’s industrial valley. Growing up, she was told that the world was your oyster, that the possibilities are endless, and you can do whatever you want in this world. And nothing in these rotten-looking buildings promised opportunity. Instead, she hoped to make a future in academia. But years later, she found herself inside the buildings as #6691: Utility Worker. During her three years working in the mill, Eliese came to know and respect the place and its workers and herself.
About Chautauqua Institution: Chautauqua Institution is a community on the shores of Chautauqua Lake in southwestern New York state that comes alive each summer with a unique mix of fine and performing arts, lectures, interfaith worship and programs, and recreational activities. As a community, we celebrate, encourage and study the arts and treat them as integral to all of learning, and we convene the critical conversations of the day to advance understanding through civil dialogue. CHQ Assembly is the online expression of Chautauqua Institution's mission.
