Kelly James Clark, Ph.D. (University of Notre Dame), is former Senior Research Fellow at the Kaufman Interfaith Institute at Grand Valley State University in Grand Rapids, MI. He has held visiting appointments at Oxford University, the University of St. Andrews, and the University of Notre Dame. Dr. Kelly is the author, editor, or co-author of more than thirty books, including Strangers, Neighbors, Friends: Muslim-Christian-Jewish Reflections on Compassion and Peace; Written to Be Heard: Recovering the Lost Messages of the Gospels; God and the Brain: Neuroscience and the Rationality of Belief; Abraham's Children: Liberty and Tolerance in an Age of Religious Conflict; and Religion and the Sciences of Origins. He writes broadly and speaks widely on compassion, tolerance, and peace. Dr. Kelly has served as Director for such Programs as “Values and Virtues in China,” “Science and Religion in China,” “Chinese Ethics,” and he has done research for projects on “Afterlife Beliefs and their Cognitive Mechanisms among the Chinese,” “The Evolutionary Psychology of Chinese Religion,” and “Science and Religion in Mainland China.” His many books on China include Three Kinds of Confucian Scholarship and A Confucian Defense of Gender Equality. His most recent book, A Spiritual Geography of Early Chinese Thought: Gods, Ancestors, and Afterlife (Bloomsbury, forthcoming) will set the stage for the conversation of the week.
